Often new parents struggle with the change that occurs from bringing home a newborn. As a mother, we are taught to find solace in the beauty and love of adding a new addition to our family and yet….it doesn’t always shape up to be easy. Extreme exhaustion can lead to sleep deprivation and a lack of patience. Getting your precious newborn to sleep means rest for the whole family.
On average babies sleep for 16 hours or more each day in increments of 1-4 hours at a time depending on their hunger level and previous nourishment. Around 3 months of age, babies begin to sleep a full 6-8 hours each night.
When putting your sweet little guy to bed, remember to follow these basic rules to ensure their safety and a restful night for you as well:
Do place your baby on its back in a crib or bassinet.
Don't add extra blankets, pillows or stuffed animals that may suffocate your newborn if they roll over.
Do keep nighttime stimulation to a minimum and create playful stimulation during the day to ensure your baby is ready for bed at night and on your sleeping schedule.
Do get help, if possible, and be sure to take shifts if your little one wakes up at night. To soothe a baby back to sleep you must be calm and patient.
Don't forget about the importance of having confidence. Your baby feels your energy so always know that you are the parent and have been given this sweet baby because you are capable!!
You've got this!
Remember that having a baby means everything is a phase and “this too will pass”. Just when you think you have it all figured out they will surprise you which is what makes it all the more fun.
